Chainmaille Price Information
Of businesses handcrafting chainmaille to order, we probably have the fastest turnaround time to be found,
but that doesn't mean we sell an inferior product. To the contrary, we're proud to be able to offer extremely
good prices on very high quality products. All our regular prices reflect direct from manufacturer discounts.
Our prices are often half those offered by other companies for similar products. Many chainmaille
businesses pay outside contractors to assemble pieces or may even offset the cost by using machine-made metal
fabric. We make our products ourselves, with almost all of the production being done in-house. As a result, we
also have total confidence in the quality of our products. We're not saying that no one has similar, or
even lower prices, but we like to think that we offer the best possible value for your money, not to mention
our own exclusive designs.
For those who don't know why the price of chainmaille depends much more upon the time involved rather than the
materials, here's a quick run down of how to make it:
1) Spin straight wire into coils
2) Cut the coils into links (rings)
3) Weave each link into place and close with pliers
4) Add beads, findings and chains as desired
The above is the part of the process put into each piece only after the original has been invented and tweaked to perfection.
Designing chainmaille is a complicated mixture of art and engineering. Those wishing more information on that part
can find it on our Art of chainmaille Design page. Paying professional artists for such time
consuming work would normally be prohibitively expensive. Our main excuse for keeping our prices so low is that we really
do love this craft.
There are a certain attributes to compare when buying chainmaille:
Link size
Link size is extremely important when comparing chainmaille. Smaller links means that more
materials and a great deal more time is involved in each item. However, when smaller links
are used, the maile is stronger, flows smoother and sits more comfortably on the skin.
Larger links don't tend to close quite as flawlessly and are more likely to pinch the skin.
Our links are the perfect size for the type of items we create. The great majority are ¼"
inside diameter, with very occasional use of 5/16" or larger for specific applications.
Materials
The importance of good materials should not be overlooked. Beware of items made with
low quality wire and components. The coating on basic fencing wire often flakes or develops a
powdery build-up due to corrosion. Some brass tarnishes easily and even discolors
the skin. We've even seen a few people using aluminum alloys which are dull and terribly weak.
Finding the best wire types for our creations has taken years. Our alloys have been chosen
specifically for being the best possible combination of quality and cost. Our alloys are
more expensive, but we feel that our products are worth it. See our
materials page for more information on our chosen
metals and other materials.
Design
The way a piece is designed has a huge impact on it's overall value. There are a few
time saving tricks which allow lower prices, but don't affect the overall value a great deal.
However, sometimes cutting corners on design can be detrimental to the look, feel or quality
of a piece. We're very proud of our craftsmanship and back that up with our
30 day money back guarantee.
Our designs are the result of many years of practical experience, and they are entirely original - ideas
crafted in metal in a way that had never been seen before. Sure, plenty of non-creative people have started
copying our work, but if you see other crafters offering the same items, made like our own, you can be confident
that the pieces are only cheap knock offs of the originals (even the ones with overinflated prices).
Our designs are our art, and we hold them to very high standards. We throw the majority of new product designs
away just because they end up resembling another's work. Therefore, we find it extremely disappointing to see others,
offering copies (exact duplicates even!) of our own original works. As sad as it seems, some even lack even the ability to
invent their own names or descriptives. Making a profit by taking another's hard work - after all the creativity,
research, development and market testing have been completed - is immoral and slothful. Those who care so little for
the craft and art in general have only greed as motivation. While we realize that if huge fashion designers can't
effectively defend themselves from commercial production of cheap copies of their original works, a tiny shop like
ours doesn't stand a chance. However, we want to make it exceedingly
clear that our work should never be confused with that of those lazy, uninventive thieves.
